Some farmers of Region Nine, hard hit by the El Nino-like conditions, will be benefiting from several water tanks and shallow wells as Government scrambles to intervene on their behalf.
Yesterday, almost $8M in chemicals, water pumps and other supplies were handed over to the Principal Regional Development Officer, Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Ovid Williams, as part of Government’s support to hinterland.
According to Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, who made the presentation at his Regent Road offices, this was only part of on-going process throughout this difficult period.
A quantity of chemicals to fight ants that are wreaking havoc on crops was also handed over.
According to Persaud, Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) will be working closely with farmers for some wells and the attention will be on storage of farine and other cassava products to guarantee a stable food supply.
Also present at the event was George Jervis, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Admin), Ministry of Agriculture.
Regions One, Seven and Eight are to also receive assistance and currently materials are being procured.
Farmers across Guyana are hard hit by the dry conditions brought on by the El Nino conditions with extra costs being borne to pump water.
While prices on local produce are not too much up, exports are likely to experience a rapid change as supplies dwindle in the face of the drought. And the weather may continue, according to predictions.
