After a routine visit by Attorney General Charles Ramson, almost two weeks ago, on the Essequibo Coast, immediate improvements have been made to both the Anna Regina and Suddie Magistrate’s Court respectively.
Both courts have now benefited from new furniture, as well as prisoner and witness docks. However, windows and mesh still need to be affixed at the Anna Regina building. This venture is however soon to commence.
AG Ramson carried out a first-hand inspection of all the courts throughout the Coast during his visit.
While on his tour, accompanied by law enforcement officers and Region Two officials, Mr. Ramson was informed about the problematic conditions encountered at both facilities.
Upon the AG’s visit to the Charity court, the team found that the partially dilapidated building is in dire need of repairs. It was noted at the Charity court the need for a proper toilet facility, ceiling, and rehabilitation works to the step and bridge is immediate. On two occasions the sitting magistrate, Faith Mc Gusty, had to abandon court at Charity because of the compounding problems of an unkempt yard, a leaking ceiling, poor toilet facility and an infestation of wasps (marabuntas).
At Anna Regina, with the replacement of new windows and mesh, the building will reportedly be more secure. It is also said that pigeons – which frequent the courtroom and sometimes disturbing the proceedings – will be prevented as a result of the modification.
