Nineteen-year-old Delroy Nero of Edward Street, Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was on Wednesday jailed for five years and was ordered to receive five strokes from the cat-o-nine tail by Magistrate Chandra Sohan when he appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.
Nero pleaded guilty to robbery under arms, committed on his former employer, Wazir Dilchand, 35, a salesman of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
The court was told that Nero while in the company of two others robbed Dilchand of $730,000.
Prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira told the court that Nero and two other men were employed as porters by Dilchand, who sells rice from his Canter truck, GLL 458, in the East Berbice area.
The men had worked for the entire day and around 13:15 hrs while in the vicinity of Patrick Dam, Angoy’s Avenue in New Amsterdam, they stopped to make a delivery.
But instead of doing the regular chores the men, who had planned the attack, held up their employer.
One of them struck Dilchand in his head with a gun and they proceeded to relieve him of the cash which he had secured in a canister and in his pocket, before escaping in the surrounding bushes.
Nero, who was recently released from jail after serving a three-year sentence for a similar offence, was nabbed at a police roadblock at around 18:00 the same day on the West Coast of Berbice.
He had $63,000 in his possession, which was concealed in his crotch.
The 19-year-old was grilled by investigators and he subsequently admitted to the crime. He told investigators that after robbing his employer, he and his accomplices hid in the bushes and parted the loot after which he went on a drinking spree.
He said that he was taking the rest home to help take care of his grandmother.
Nero was positively identified by Dilchand as his former employee and one of the persons who robbed him.
Prosecutor Figueira asked the court to impose the maximum penalty on the culprit, whom he said had only recently been released from jail.
He noted that the teenager along with his accomplices chose to rob the hand that fed them, and therefore should not be shown any mercy.
