Perhaps, determined to prove that their controversial insertion into the FIFA’s ‘Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF’ Guyana Football Federation National League is justified, Rosignol United produced another impressive performance, knocking off Buxton United 2-0, at the Blairmont Community Centre ground on Sunday.
Goals in each half from Gladwyn Johnson (30th) and Rawl Scott (51st) ensured that they register their second win in as many matches to go to the top of the table in the round robin competition where the winner collects a whopping $1million.
Exuding confidence after a 2-1 opening day triumph against Victoria Kings, the West Berbice team were quickly into their stride with strikers Keron Boston and Johnson applying immense pressure on the visiting Buxton United defensive line, while the visitors looked very passive in attack except for the silky skills demonstrated by mid-fielder Clive Andries, whose creativity was not matched by his teammates.
Johnson put the Yellows ahead when he received a pass from the right side and in one sweeping motion lashed a powerful shot into the roof of the goal.
As Buxton struggled to keep possession, the homesters loaded the opposition’s penalty area with as much as three attackers, looking for an additional cushion, but no more goals were scored in the half.
Coming out in the final period, Buxton United initially looked more purposeful in attack with the Yellows goalkeeper Joel Singh, who was a mere spectator to that point, having to pull off a magnificent tip over the cross bar to deny a powerful header from Andries.
Rosignol’s Coach Keith O’Jeer made an early substitution, replacing Keron Boston with Scott and the swap paid immediate dividends when the latter was left unmarked after a cross from the right wing landed in his path and he hammered a powerfully struck left-footer past the outstretched hands of a diving Brian Johnson between the uprights.
That gave some more ease to the Yellows, but more pain to the Buxtonians.
Scott could have gotten his second goal shortly after, but Johnson was equal to the task, once again diving full stretched to push the ball back into play and was fortunate to see a second attempt sail just outside the left upright.
Buxton won two free kicks in quick succession, but both sailed harmlessly over the crossbar, giving goalkeeper Singh no problems whatsoever.
Buxton for the most part looked uninspiring in attack with the strategy seemingly just to have one man upfront, clearly lacking the zip to test the competent backline of the Yellows.
The final whistle finally came to offer reprieve to the visitors.
