Some three weeks after 27-year-old Kunja ‘Nave’ Beharry was found dead in a cell at the Camp Street Prisons, relatives are still awaiting answers.
Meanwhile, to date, there has been no official word from the Prison Authorities about the incident and the status of investigation, if any at all.
When contacted yesterday, Director of Prisons Dale Erskine said that the matter is in the hands of the police.
“The police are investigating as far as we know” Erskine told this newspaper. When asked as to the whereabouts of the other prisoners who were in the cell where Beharry was at the time of his death, Erskine maintained “the police are investigating”.
On August 20 last, Beharry, 27, of Good Hope, Mahaica, was found dead in his cell at the Georgetown Prisons. According to a police statement, Beharry was behaving abnormally in his cell located in the Social Block, when he was attacked by two other inmates and sustained injuries.
Since the incident, the Prison authorities had refused to comment on the incident and this publication was referred to the Ministry of Home Affairs which subsequently released a statement on the incident.
According to the statement from the Ministry, Beharry was beaten by two other inmates who were deemed as mentally ill. It was also noted in the statement that Beharry too was of unsound mind which was refuted by the man’s relatives.
It was further stated that “The Ministry remains supportive of the Prison Administration, whose responsibility it is to ensure the safety of prisoners in its custody; however, the Ministry will not condone breaches in prison rules and regulations, which places at risk, or imperils, the life of persons incarcerated,”.
