The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) is well equipped with enough generation capacity to deal with the anticipated increase in demand of electricity during the Christmas season.
This is the opinion of Chief Executive Officer, Bharrat Dindyal, who stated that the power company is fortunate this year to have 20 megawatts of new base load capacity, which will be implemented before the Christmas season commences.
However, Dindyal did not want to give a guarantee of everything being perfect during the season, as he explained that the biggest challenge during the Christmas season is the generation capacity to fully supply its consumers.
“I don’t want to say that it is an absolute guarantee of all being well, but we should have more than adequate generation capacity for the season.”
On many occasions, GPL has had to take emergency action by importing mobile sets to supplement capacity during the Christmas season.
Last year, the power company had to rent three 1.6 megawatt Caterpillar generating sets at a cost of US$55,000 per month from Miami, USA, for two months.
Technical problems had been the cause of a series of disruptions in both Demerara and Berbice during October and the early part of November last year but many of these difficulties have since been rectified.
