A resident of Angoy’s Avenue (Cow Dam) in New Amsterdam was refused bail by Magistrate Chandra Sohan when he appeared before him at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of having Carnal Knowledge of a child under the age of 13.
The man, a 29-year old labourer was not required to plea to the indictable charge when it was read to him.
The case for the prosecution was presented by Corporal Roberto Figueira who told the court that between Tuesday April 1 and Wednesday April 30, last year, the accused forcefully had sex with his 13 year old stepdaughter on more than one occasions.
The prosecutor stated that the accused would usually commit the act when the child’s mother, who has nine children, was not at home.
Prosecutor Figueira opposed bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
He further stated that there is the likelihood that the offence will be repeated, if the man is placed on bail.
Kaieteur News understands that the accused would use lubricant to assist him in his dastardly act and usually threatened to kill the child if she told anyone about his actions.
The child who is the eldest of the nine children, lives in squalor conditions in a shack 14ft x10ft with her other siblings, mother and stepfather.
She became pregnant when she was just 11-years old and had to stop school.
The mother later got wind of the situation and subsequently reported the matter to the police who apprehended and charged the suspect.
The magistrate refused bail and the matter has been transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court for October 2.
