With the construction of the new GPL plant at Kingston, where GPL is building a 69 KB link from Georgetown to Sophia, a proposal is being examined to extend the link from Sophia across to Versailles, West Bank Demerara.
This is according to the Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL), Bharrat Dindyal, who noted that the link from Sophia to Versailles will be done via submarine cable, after which the power company also plans to construct an overhead transmission line to Edinburg.
“So what’s going to happen is that when we deliver power to Edinburg, we’re actually going to build 13.8 KB feeders at Edinburg and one of those feeders will be powering back in the direction of the power station and the other feeder will be powering right down to Hubu. So essentially when we have one feeder now, we will actually have three feeders,” Dindyal explained.
He also noted that there is a plan to actually continue the transmission system from Edinburg to Parika, East Bank Essequibo. However, according to Dindyal, this is not within GPL’s current five year plan.
“As you know, there is a lot of development taking place in Parika and we’re proposing to extend the transmission system eventually.”
Meanwhile, the Kingston plant, Dindyal said, is expected to be commissioned later this month. By October, the power company is hoping to have completed the performance test of the station and it would be available for commercial use.
Kaieteur News had previously reported that difficulties to plant poles in some sections of the Lamaha embankment have contributed to the delay in the completion of the new Guyana Power and Light power generating plant at Kingston.
The new transmission line will stretch over five kilometres between Kingston and Sophia and is estimated to be completed at a cost of about US$300,000.
However, it was disclosed that the entire project is estimated to attract a whopping US$27M which will be funded by Government in its quest to reduce the power company’s cost of production even as the electricity service is improved in the city.
Cabinet, earlier this year, had offered no objection to a contract valued at $176M for the construction of the foundation of the 21-megawatt power generating plant.
And the plant, which will serve to replace the current generating station, also located at Kingston, has since been completed and furnished with the requisite generating systems.
