A goal dispute in the feature game of the Cellink Premier League last Friday evening at the Tucville ground involving defending champions Alpha United and Pele brought a premature end to what was developing as an intense duel. Seventy six (76) minutes into the battle which was locked at 1-1, 10-man Alpha were still in the hunt as was Pele, but the defending champs earned a corner and it was at this point, that confusion reigned.
The kick was taken with the ball allegedly hitting the post and rebounding into play. Some of the Pele players are contending that the ball went over the touch line before rebounding into play and it was at this point that one of their players bent down and held the ball but some of his colleagues and Alpha players shouted that the ball was still in play. When he dropped it, an opposing player kicked it into the goal.
The Alpha players started to celebrate but Pele players held fast that the ball was dead. The standing referee Roy Mc Arthur and his assistant Nykasie Liverpool then consulted and Mc Arthur blew for goal but this did not go down too well with the fans and players (Pele), some of the fans entering the field seeking an answer to what exactly transpired resulting in the referee pointing to the middle.
Efforts were made by both sides (management and players) to deal with the situation but the persistent encroachment and loud overtones of the crowd resulted in the game being abandoned by the referee whose report is expected to be submitted to the GFA, which will then make a decision on the game.
Alpha, were reduced to 10-men in the 41st minute when Philbert Moffatt was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. They had taken the lead in the 11th minute through a Dwain Jacobs goal off of a rebound shot which Pele’s keeper did not hold cleanly. But a sharp header by Solomon Austin in the 23rd minute evened the score.
Friday evening’s opening game saw home team Fruta Conquerors holding the Guyana Defence Force to a 0-0 draw. The GDF with their one point now join Camptown on 25 points and joint second in the standings behind Alpha on 31. The Army has played 12 games, one more than Camptown. Conquerors move to 20 points and 3rd overall.
