John Fernandes Men’s 2nd Division Hockey
Dragons host GCC at Uitvlugt
Due to the unavailability of the DCC and GCC grounds, only one match will be played today in the John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd Men’s Second Division Hockey Competition which continues, at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground.
The game pits homesters Western Dragons versus GCC in a clash that is vital for the hosts who’re yet to earn a point, while the latter will be looking for full points to get back in the race for the title. But, with home advantage, Dragons could prove to be a formidable foe for the visitors, who might still be smarting from their 3-0 defeat at the hands of a youthful Old Fort unit in their previous encounter.
The hosts will be spearheaded by the Sampson brothers Andy and Adrian, while support should come from Traison Corbin, Cobin Forbes, Alex Paul, Cove Bowman and Deon Branford, who netted the lone goal in their 3-1 lost to Hikers.
Always a team with skilful players, they’ve been known to self destruct at crucial times due to a lack of focus and intensity. Another obvious weakness is the scarcity of mental fortitude that evidently disrupts the smooth flow of their game and has been blamed for many defeats that the team has suffered in local hockey.
On the other hand, the well drilled GCC team will no doubt be seeking to rebound from the loss and that could see a full strength squad taking the pitch.
That could see the inclusion of the speedy Shad Fernandes, who was missing from the last game, while Shaka Gill might be brought up from the central position to lead the attack on goal along with Stuart Gonsalves.
Goalkeeper Michael Xavier will need more support from the back to stop the penetration by the opposing forwards or he might find himself having to do a lot to keep them in the game.
Providing Dragons play their strong unit, a very interesting contest is in the making.
Play starts at 16:45 hrs.
