-National teams to be selected shortly
Hornets ‘A’ finished with a record of five wins and a single loss to end with the best aggregate and captured the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Sevens League which concluded Saturday last, at the National Park.
Caribs ‘A’ occupied the runner-up spot after closing with a record of three victories, one defeat and a draw, while the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ended on three wins and a similar amount of losses.
The other two teams in the competition Hornets ‘B’ and Caribs ‘B’ failed to impress.
Starting Day Two with comparable results after the opening day, Hornets ‘A’ played impressively to emerge champions, going unbeaten throughout the day.
They opened up with a 14-5 triumph over the GDF and then crushed their ‘B’ unit 34-17, before returning to defeat Caribs ‘A’ 12-7 in the marquee showdown of the afternoon.
Caribs on the other hand after losing to Hornets ‘A’ drew with Hornets ‘B’ 21-21 and then beat the Army 17-5 in their final encounter.
The soldiers’ only taste of success on the final day came when they squeezed past Hornets ‘B’ 14-7.
Meanwhile, in results of first day action: Hornets ‘A’ defeated Caribs 17-5; GDF then beat Caribs ‘B’ 21-12 and returned to defeat Hornets ‘A’ 21-12 as well; Caribs thrashed Hornets ‘B’ 26-0; Hornets ‘A’ clobbered Hornets ‘B’ 38-5 and Caribs ‘A’ eased past GDF 12-5.
The Women were also in action over the past two weekends, engaging in scrubby matches as the GRFU seek to intensify preparations for the national teams.
According to an official from the Union, the tournament will be used to select the Men’s and Women’s national teams for upcoming international engagements.
