Suspected mastermind held
Police have detained a Kitty businessman who they believe was the mastermind of the kidnapping of the 21-year old Rorhema Dookie.
The businessman was detained at his home yesterday morning after police obtained additional information during their probe.
The arrest of the businessman occurred a day after police detained several suspects during an early morning raid in the squatting communities of Tucville and Stevedore Housing Schemes.
At least 15 people, including two women, were taken into custody and one of the suspects has reportedly confessed to kidnapping the daughter of popular Kitty businessman Beharry Dookie, called Natoo.
Another man from North Ruimveldt turned himself over to the police late yesterday evening after ranks searched his home.
According to a source, one of the suspects was positively identified in an identification parade yesterday.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspects who are cooperating with investigators had claimed that they acted alone.
However, yesterday police received further information that implicated the businessman, who is a well known character.
The businessman was previously implicated in a Canadian visa scam in which he and another Canadian-based Guyanese allegedly ripped off several persons after promising to secure study visas for them.
The Canadian-based Guyanese was charged but the businessman remained free although there was evidence of his involvement in the scam.
At least two of the victims have taken private legal action in the High Court to recover their money from the businessman.
Rorhema Dookie, whose father owns the popular Natoo’s Bar at Lamaha and Pike Streets in Kitty, was abducted on August 26 in Thomas Street shortly after leaving classes at the Business College in Thomas Street.
Dookie and her boyfriend, Joel Oudkerk, were sitting in Oudkerk’s car when three men emerged from a dark coloured Toyota AT 212. After dragging Oudkerk from his car and hitting him on the head, the gunmen allegedly forced Dookie into their vehicle and escaped.
The young woman was reportedly blindfolded and taken to a house, but was left untied.
Someone using Dookie’s mobile phone subsequently contacted the young woman’s parents and demanded $40M for her release.
But in a bizarre twist, Dookie was reunited with her family the following night after a woman allegedly pulled the victim from the house where she was being held.
At the time, the kidnappers had reportedly left Dookie unguarded.
Residents in the area realized that Dookie was the kidnapped victim and took her to the East La Penitence Police Station.
