For the past four days, residents at Leguan have been without electricity and running water, due to the collapse of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) generator.
Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Chairman, Durga Persaud told Kaieteur News yesterday that the residents have been experiencing this inconvenience since Sunday afternoon.
He explained that due to the broken GPL generator, the water station does not have the capacity to pump water for the residents.
Persaud said that during a discussion with the GPL operator at the site, he was informed that the parts for the broken generator are being sourced from overseas, and should be in the country today, following which the residents should expect to get some relief.
“I am ashamed about this situation, because everybody complaining and they are coming to me. The people of this island are frustrated because you know how difficult it is to live without water and light…people are frustrated, man,” the NDC Chairman said.
He noted that even the teachers of the school are complaining about the state of affairs at the island, since it is seriously hampering attendance at the learning institution.
The NDC Chairman also said that the residents depend exclusively on the rain, in order to get some amount of water in their homes.
On a normal basis, the island of Leguan from Monday to Thursday would receive electricity from 16:00 hrs to 08:00 daily, while from Friday, throughout the weekend; they would receive a full flow of power.
