No 8 Village softball cricket team of West Coast Berbice are the winners of the inaugural Norman Singh Memorial Sports Complex Inter-Village 10 overs softball cricket competition, which was played last Sunday at the NSMSC ground, No 6 Bel Air, West Coast Berbice.
Three teams participated in the final rounds of the competition namely No8, No7 and host Custom Warriors of No6.
In the first game, No8 took care of Customs Warriors, beating them by 31 runs. No8 batted first and reached 78-7 in their allotment of overs with Randy Persaud contributing 23. The host in reply was skittled out for 47 in 9 overs. Bowling for the winners, Anthony Benn took 3 wickets.
In game two, the Customs Warriors outfit, were again on the losing end as they went down to No 7 by 6 wickets.
The Warriors batted first and were dismissed for 45. Bowling for No 7 Paul Jimmy was the chief destroy with 4 wickets and he was supported by Yadram Brijmohan with 2. In reply No 7 raced to 47-4 in 7 overs with Andrew Kenny being unbeaten on 20.
In the final No 8 batted first and made 53 all out in 9.2 overs with Emile Murphy 18.
Bowling for No7, Paul Jimmy was again among the wickets with 3.
No 7 in their turn at the crease found the going tough and fell for 47 in 9.4 overs, to loose by 6 runs.
The main destroyers for No8 were Winston Stoby with 4-10 and Aubrey London 2-9 in their two overs.
At the end of the competition the No8 team were presented with $20,000 and the NSMSC trophy, while No 7 received $10,000 for their effort.
Winston Stoby was adjudged the man-of-the-match and received a trophy. The presentation was done by Ghansham Singh manager of the complex.
Singh later told the media that the activity was part of the organisation’s task in keeping the youths occupied in a meaningful way in an effort to keeping them off the streets and away from drugs and other illicit activities.
He said they will make it a regular affair. Another competition involving more teams with more lucrative prizes will begin this Sunday.
The entity he said has now expanded and is now catering for other activities such as Football, Volleyball and other outdoor activities.
