There is absolutely no way that sports activities can progress unless the corporate community intervenes with viable packages. However, the worldwide recession has had a negative impact on the local economy resulting in many corporate entities adapting a laissez faire attitude to such requests.
This may be so but there are some companies that, irrespective of the hard times, refuse to shirk their corporate responsibility. Yesterday morning, furniture giants, Courts added some value to the S&S/HEP boxing card, scheduled for Saturday September 26 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH). Director of Purchasing and Acting Country Manager, Clyde DeHaas handed over a check valued $400,000 to Carwyn Holland to offset some of the expenses of the upcoming card.
The ceremony took place at Court’s Main Street office where Mr. DeHaas handed over the check to Holland in the presence of President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool, Marketing Assistant (Courts Inc), Mr. Pernell Cummings and members of the media corps.
Mr. DeHaas pledged his company’s continued support even as he congratulated the promoters for organizing such a good card. He also reminded the gathering of Courts willingness to promote local sports.
Holland thanked Mr. DeHaas and Courts for their benevolence while reminding the public that the upcoming card is qualitative and behooves well for local tourism. Mr. Abdool also endorsed the card and told press representatives that the fight would be broadcast in 22 countries. He said that Guyana is incapable of carrying a live broadcast but arrangements have been made to distribute the fight after the night of the card. Consequently the GBBC boss expressed deep gratitude to Courts for the sponsorship even as he reminded the gathering that, “Courts lead the way in local boxing.”
Meanwhile, Iwan Azore is expected to arrive in Guyana from his Trinidad base to oppose Wayne Briggs in a catchweight match. The two had earlier fought and Azore had come out victorious. Briggs has since vowed to avenge that loss. He has finally been afforded the opportunity.
Local heavyweight king, Mitchell Rogers would also get a chance to showcase his skills following strenuous efforts by the promoter. He will match gloves with Dexter Collins in a 6 rounds non title heavyweight bout. Already, Rogers is oozing confidence since he has been training diligently at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) in preparation for whichever fighter found the nerves to ink the deal. The boxers are intensifying preparation activities at the various boxing gyms.
