Dear Editor,
After reading the news of Mark Benschop, Lincoln Lewis and Norris Witter being charged for “unlawful picketing” I had to conclude the charge reeks of political intimidation.
Here’s why I think it is political. Recently leaders of the AFC Khemraj Ramjattan and Raphael Trotman were picketing after refusing to go to parliament and they were not charged. On the day Lincoln Lewis, Mark Benschop and Norris Witter were arrested for unlawful picketing, Immigration Consultant Balwant Persaud and former Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen were picketing with them but they were not arrested or charged.
Nalini and Rasheed Mohammed, a couple seeking a kidney transplant, were picketing at the opening of the CARICOM Heads Summit where Lewis, Benschop and Witter were also picketing.
The Mohammeds were not arrested and charged. Recently some young people picketed Ramjattan’s office and they were not charged with unlawful picketing.
The PNC have picketing exercises at different places since they walked out of Parliament and none of their people have been arrested and charged.
From what I have learnt in the picketing mentioned above no one sought or got permission to picket. A senior officer in the Police Force told me there is no law against picketing or one that says people have to get permission to picket.
Everyone asked about the peculiar arrest, incarceration and charge of Benschop, Lewis and Witter gave varied answers.
No one had the answer. Hints were given why the trio was specifically targeted to go before the court for picketing. Something is not right in Rome (Guyana).
