Formal opening postponed
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Inter-Block Football train will steam to Linden tonight with a double-header to mark the opening of the event in the Mining Town after a formal opening ceremony had to be postponed.
Cocatara Retrieve plays Christianburg in the first game that is scheduled to being at 6:00pm while Silvertown Scheme takes on Watookas Combine in the feature encounter of what is expected to be keen rivalry at Mackenzie Sports Club. President of Upper Demerara’s Football Association (UDFA), Brian Joseph told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that a formal opening ceremony with the necessary addresses was on the cards but had to be postponed owing to a recent development.
“We attempted to have the formal opening but (Parliamentary Secretary with the Ministry of Sport), Steve (Ninvalle) is not too healthy,” Joseph said. This newspaper subsequently confirmed that Ninvalle is indeed not in the best of health.
Joseph said that the closing ceremony of the event will have all the necessary ingredients that will be missing from the opening. Nevertheless, the community-based competition is expected to attract huge support in the Mining Town.
