Twenty-five (25) lifters from four gyms will be vying for top honours when the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) stages the National Intermediate Weightlifting Championship at the Aracari Resort, Versailles, West Bank Demerara on Sunday August 30.
Secretary of the GAWA Deion Nurse said that the gyms already slated to participate are, the Berbice based Hardcore Gym, Barims, of East Bank Essequibo, Briswood of Linden and the True Foundation Gym from Georgetown.
Those attending the tournament will witness last year’s Criollo Cup Bronze Medalist Sean Cozier and 2008 national senior champion Fazim Abdool, in action. Intense competition is also envisaged from among young lifters attempting to impress the selectors for a place on this year’s Criollo Cup Championship team scheduled for Puerto Rico from 21-25 October.
Meanwhile, the President of the Pan-American Weightlifting Federation, Mr. William Ozuna and his assistant Mr. Luigi Matos are scheduled here for a four days visit and would be attending the championships.
While here, the duo would be examining ways of assisting the local association in developmental ploys towards the future of weightlifting in Guyana. Action commences at 14:00hrs and patrons are required to contribute a minimal entrance fee of $300.
