Defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United continued their quest to retain the Cellink Premier League championship, despite being held to a 0-0 draw by BK International Western Tigers on Sunday evening, at the Tucville ground.
The evening’s other encounter saw the fast running Guyana Defence Force (GDF) get past Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 3-2 after coming from behind.
GFC cantered into the lead in the 15th minute compliments of a Kelroy Pilgrim effort, but that was soon neutralised when Warren Gilkes found the back of the nets for the Army. GFC took the lead once again in the 46th minute when their leading striker Peter Parks netted from the penalty spot.
GDF responded in like manner from the spot in the 75th minute through Marlon Benjamin, before the winner came in the 3rd minute of added on time, compliments of Royan Morrison.
With the victory, the Army moves to 21 points, while GFC remains on 4. Alpha are in pole position, just one point ahead of Sunburst Camptown on 25, Fruta Conquerors are on 13, Western Tigers 9, Pele 7 and Flamingo 2.
All the teams have completed 9 matches in the two- round league which features 8 clubs.
Alpha will be seeking to strengthen their ascendancy even further when they lock horns with GFC on Friday when the competition continues, but GFC will also be looking for at least an equal share of the spoils in what is anticipated to be an exciting duel.
In Friday’s main event, GDF and Western Tigers face off in a potentially explosive showdown between two balanced and hungry sides. The Tigers will definitely be aiming to take the form they displayed against Alpha in this match, while the Army too will be banking on their rich vein of form to take them to another victory. An enthralling showdown is probable.
