Defending champions Fruta Conquerors, Santos, Renaissance and Uprising are into the semi-final of the 2009 Courts Pee Wee League following contrasting quarter-final victories yesterday at the Banks DIH ground, Thirst Park.
Santos recorded the biggest margin of victory on the day, a 5-0 whipping of the hapless Buxton on the back of a hat-trick by their captain Job Caesar. Renaissance banged their way past Thomas United 4-0 compliments of a brace by Keron Tascher while Uprising were led to a 3-0 win over Marian Academy with their captain Travis Lyken netting a double.
Defending champions Fruta Conquerors proved why they are the champs by erasing a 2-0 deficit against Sunburst Camptown in another clash of the Juices to win the intriguing battle 2-0 on penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie in regulation and extra time.
This was surely the match of the afternoon with Camptown easing to what was felt at the time was a comfortable lead. Conquerors started out as the more energetic bunch and more aggressive of the two teams.
They [Conquerors] could have taken the early lead but their star player Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett hit the cross bar and uprights rather than find the back of the nets. Camptown slowly established dominance in the game and were rewarded in the 11th minute when Michael Campbell rocked the nets. At the half way mark (20 minutes) the score remained unchanged. As the game matured, both teams created chances which went wide of the mark. With 5 minutes left to game time, Camptown won a corner on the right side of their opponents’ goal and Ishmael Rogers made it 2-0 with a well directed header.
Perhaps Camptown felt they were in cruise mode and well on their way to the semis but Hackett and Conquerors felt they were still in with a chance. Conquerors sprung to life and ultra offensive mood while Camptown, still pressing forward left their defence unattended.
In the 37th minute Jermaine Griffith narrowed the lead for Conquerors when he calmly patted the ball past the Camptown goalie and in the penultimate minute of the game, star forward and captain Ryan Hackett collected the ball midway inside the Camptown half and with most of the players caught in the Conquerors half, this was his moment of glory and he grabbed it with hands and feet to nail the equalizer fro his side.
The ensuing 10 minutes of extra time did not break the deadlock and penalty kicks were needed to decide the winner. Conquerors came out victors by a 2-0 margin as Camptown hit the cross bar with their shot, the three others were saved by the Conquerors goal keeper. Camptown’s custodian also saved two of Conquerors’ shots.
Santos made light work of Buxton as they marched into the semis 5-0. Their captain Job Caesar enjoyed a brilliant game with a hat-trick of goals, all powerful and well directed shots in the 12th, 32nd and 36th minute. Alwayne Williams in the 18th and Kelsey Benjamin one minute later were the other players on target for Santos.
Renaissance took care of Thomas United 4-0, Keron Tascher netting in the 7th and 16th minute, Jamanine Beckles in the 15th and David George in the 30th.
Uprising made light work Marian Academy side as they won 3-0, thanks to a double from their captain Travis Lyken (3, 19) and Akosi Jervis in the 36th minute.
Who will make it to the final set for Thursday? Well that question will be answered today when the semi-finals are contested at the same venue.
Santos, who looked very solid in offence and defence and certainly one of the favorite teams to win, will lock horns with Renaissance another team that has displayed encouraging skills in the tournament.
Defending champions Conquerors will match skills with Uprising in what is expected to be another interesting battle. Kick off time is 13:00hrs.
