Ministry of Health arson suspect Keith Ferrier has been granted bail in the High Court in the sum of $350,000. Ferrier’s attorney Mortimer Coddett made the petition and it was subsequently accepted.
Coddett had earlier argued that there were no legal backings for the denial of bail, by the magistrate.
But the prosecution had argued that Ferrier was positively picked out by an eyewitness through an identification parade.
Ferrier, a minibus driver from South Ruimveldt, is jointly charged with Clayton Westford, 19, of Lot 7 West La Penitence, an office assistant at the Ministry of Finance and 21-year-old Tedenna Bagot, a pork-knocker, of 32 Second Street Alexander Village, of unlawfully and maliciously setting fire to the Ministry of Health’s building on July 16.
A number of persons were rounded up for questioning in connection with the fire.
Kurt Thierens called “Glasses” or “Baje” and Colin Jones called “Bunny”, were also arrested in connection with the fire, but they managed to escape from the Providence Police Station.
Police Corporal Diana Chichester was charged and placed on $300,000 bail for negligently and carelessly causing the prisoners’ escape.
A fire, believed to have been sparked by channa bombs, completely destroyed the Ministry of Health’s main building and an annex at Brickdam in the wee hours of July 17, devouring records, vehicles and a string of key divisions in a major blow to the health sector.
Meanwhile this newspaper understands that causing death by dangerous driving accused Christopher Evans has also secured bail in the High Court in the sum of $250,000. Evans was remanded to prison on Wednesday last by Magistrate Priya Beharry.
It was alleged that on August 16, Evans drove a motor van in a dangerous manner which resulted in the deaths of Albert and Marlyn Pearson.
