Albion Community Centre successfully upheld their 50-over cricket champion status by defeating Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar to become the 2009 Tenelec Inc, First Division 50-over Cricket Champion of Berbice.
Spearheading them to what turned out in the end a comfortable victory after an exciting tussle were their national cricketers Veerasammy Permaul and West Indies batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon who flew in from Trinidad and Tobago that same morning after participating in the WIPA match on Saturday and could not open the batting as usual.
In the match which was played at Albion, Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar won the toss and with Chattergoon declared in the Albion Team but still travelling on the East Bank Demerara at that time, Rose Hall understandingly asked Albion to take first strike.
Their strategy looked like it was paying off when the first over Renwick Batson removed Imran Khan for 0 with only one run on the board. Albion at that point decided to send in Permaul in an unaccustomed position at No. 3 with Sewnarine Chattergoon still in Georgetown, to hold the situation. He and the opener Harrinarine Chattergoon admirably filling for his older brother did more than that as they unexpectedly added 94 for the 2nd wicket in 19.1 overs before Permaul was caught off left arm, spinner Ravi Narine for 52 (6 fours – 56 balls) his only first division half century and his second in any level of the game.
Chattergoon was joined by Jonathan Foo and after they added 10 runs for the 3rd wicket, Chattergoon was caught off Narine for a timely and well made 47 (4 fours 1 six – 62 balls) to leave Albion for 105 for 3 in 22.2 overs and still without Chattergoon.
Ranga Lachigadu joined Foo and 2 overs later Foo became Narine’s 3rd victim, caught for 21 (1 four – 25 balls) and Albion were a bit shaky at 142 for 4 in 30.3 overs.
However by that time Sewnarine Chattergoon had arrived and went in at No. 6 and he and Lachigadu ensured no further flutters until after they had added 87 runs between them in 13.3 overs after which Lachigadu was run out for a solid 56 (4 fours 1 six – 55 balls) at that stage Albion being 229 for 5 in 44 overs.
In the remaining six overs, Chattergoon and Doodnauth Lallbeharry added another valuable 34 runs between them to leave Albion in a good position at 263 for 5 in their allotted overs. Chattergoon was on 63 N.O (4 fours, 2 sixes – 52 balls) and Lallbeharry 10 N.O) (1 six – 3 balls). Bowling for Rose Hall Town, Ravi Narine took 3 for 33 from 8 overs.
When Rose Hall began their run chase, they lost Delbert Hicks to right arm legspinner Sewnarine Chattergoon for 3 at 4 for 1. The other opener was joined by West Indies Selectee Royston Crandon and they did well to get the rate up to 5 an over at 50 for 1 after 10 overs. However the introduction of left arm spinner Permaul and his Guyana teammate Devendra Bishu tightened the situation for Albion with Batson succumbing to the pressure, caught off Permaul for 28 at 56 in 14.1 overs, the run rate now under 4.
After 11 runs were scored in the next 3.4 overs, Jason Sinclair was bowled by Bishu for 1.
National middle order batsman Assad Fudadin came in and together he and Crandon kept Rose Hall hopes alive with 58 run 4th wicket partnership made in 11.1 overs before Crandon was caught for 56 (3 fours 1 six – 71 balls) off offspinner Lachigadu at 125 for 4 after 29.1 overs with Rose Hall still needing 139 runs from 20.5 overs at 6.65 runs per over.
Semi-final hero Khemraj Mahadeo came in and together he and Fudadin kept Rose Hall in the game, adding 51 between them in just 7.2 overs before Mahadeo was caught and bowled by Permaul for 24 (1 four 1 six – 21 balls) at 176 for 6 after 36.3 overs still needing 88 runs from 81 balls.
With Fudadin still there, Rose Hall Town still had an outside chance but he lost two partners, Hooper for 2 to Permaul and Terrence Madramootoo to Chattergoon for 11.
With the pressure fully on him now, Fudadin tried to almost single handedly see it through but after hitting 13 runs off 5 balls he holed out to the long on boundary to Chattergoon and was caught by Bishu for a heroic 73 (1 four 2 sixes – 87 balls) at 211 for 8 after 42 overs. It was only a matter of time as Permaul cleaned up the last two wickets to see Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar bowled out for 223 in 44.2 overs to lose by 40 runs.
Permaul ended with 5 for 41 from 9.2 overs and Sewnarine Chattergoon 3 for 40 from 5 overs.
After the match Albion received the Tenelec Inc. Trophy and first prize of $100, 000 (one hundred thousand dollars) while Rose Hall Town Windies Sports bar received $60, 000 as runners-up.
Veerasammy Permaul was adjudged Man-of-the-Match and received a trophy and $10, 000 for his performance. He also received an incentive for having the best bowling figures in the finals while Assad Fudadin accepted his for being the batsman with the highest score in the final.
