The Ministry of Housing is attempting to resolve a dispute between a group of squatters and Toolsie Persaud Limited (TPL) over land in Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
Kaieteur News understands that a senior Housing official met with the residents last week. According to residents, the official has promised to speak with a senior TPL official in a bid to allow the squatters to remain on the land.
They also met with another official who was provided with information about the number of houses and residents in the area.
The dispute escalated last week after the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) disconnected several power lines that GPL itself had installed in the area some two months ago. This occurred after Toolsie Persaud Limited (TPL) stated that the land was theirs and threatened to take legal action against the power company.
GPL had erected the poles, power lines and transformers as part of the company’s Unserved Area Project (UAP). Many of the residents had wired their homes in anticipation of accessing power from the national grid for the first time.
Ingrid Bowen, the Chairperson of the squatting community, confirmed that TPL won a court dispute it had with the squatters about four years ago.
The squatters were issued with a court order to vacate the area. But Bowen said that a top Government official intervened and told them to stay there.
TPL is only claiming the northern section of the area and squatters on the southern section of the same land are unaffected by the dispute. Some residents have occupied the land for over 20 years and said they are determined to stay.
