The respective winners of the East Coast Demerara Reunion ‘Million Dollar Baby’ Knockout Football Competition received their prizes yesterday during a simple ceremony at American Exchange Barber Shop & Salon on Regent Street.
Taking the top prize were Alpha United who defeated Fruta Conquerors 6-1 in the final, while GDF beat Victoria Kings 4-2 on penalty kicks to claim third place.
The winning team received $500,000 and a trophy, while Fruta Conquerors collected $200,000 plus a trophy, GDF $100,000 and Kings $50,000.
The Most Valuable Player was Dwight Peters and he was presented with a trophy, while Kings was awarded the Most Disciplined Team prize.
All of the losing clubs collected training equipment in the form of balls and cones.
Giving an overview of the tournament, Organising Secretary Lynton Luke said that the whole aim of the event was to improve the standard of football on the East Coast of Demerara, adding that three of the resident teams made it to the quarter-finals, while one progressed to the semis.
He disclosed that the tournament which was in its inaugural year will become an annual affair and it is envisioned that promotional activities will commence earlier, while efforts to include other events are being contemplated.
Attempts to market the programme to attract players who once played for clubs on the East Coast, but who are currently residing overseas will be made as well.
The tournament was put together by Cool Crew Promotions, Victoria Kings, Team Guyana USA and Mark Phillips of Body Central Boutique.
Luke in ending his remarks thanked the following business entities for their support and they include Banks DIH, H.N Nauth & Sons, Region #4 Democratic Council, the Guyana Football Federation, the Guyana Football Association, the East Demerara Football Association, Ministry of Culture through Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle, American Exchange Barber Shop & Salon, Giftland Office Max, Body Central Boutique and One Stop Hardware Store.
