Bartica beat Essequibo 3-1
The battle for the final available spot in the Guyana Football Federation National League between respective teams from Bartica, Essequibo and East Bank kicked off on Saturday last with home team Bartica taking pole position following their 3-1 win over Essequibo.
The game was played on a soggy Bartica Community Centre ground outfield after the skies opened about one hour before the scheduled start of the game. The heavy downpour left parts of the field with pools of water.
When the game finally got going, the home team wasted no time in wresting the initiative from the visitors as they seek to qualify for the main draw of the National League.
Within 9 seconds of the start, they were one 1-0 up, John Joseph sending them on their way.
Essequibo it seemed, were still feeling the effects of traveling to Bartica. Joseph received a thru ball and found himself with the keeper alone to beat which he did easily.
After absorbing a few minutes of the encounter, the lads from the Cinderella County finally got their touches together as they equalized in the 33rd minute, Marson Bowen scoring after a good build up down the centre.
But just when it seemed like the Essequibians were on their way to earning an equal share of the points, former National Under-17 player Andel Norton and his teammates were harbouring other ideas.
Norton tucked away the go ahead goal for Bartica with 5 minutes to full time. The ball unfortunately stuck in the water in front of the opponents’ goal and Norton quickly capitalized on the opportunity to slot it into the open goal.
He put the result of the game beyond the reach of Essequibo one minute later with a superb header from a well directed cross.
Preliminary round play will continue on Saturday in Essequibo when Grove Hi Tech of East Bank match skills with the home team in what will be a crucial encounter for both sides.
Defeat for the home team will definitely send out of the reckoning and will set up a grand finale between East Bank and Bartica, that game will be played in the city at a venue to be decided.
The venue for Saturday’s clash in Essequibo is also yet to be decided. According to the GFF, the New Opportunity Corp ground at Onderneeming is being sought.
