The inaugural Rupununi Football Association Senior football league, which commenced on July 24, is continuing at the St. Ignatius ground. The league has attracted teams from St. Ignatius, Tabatinga, Gladiators, Kumu Terminators, Moco-Moco Football Club, Snatchers, Shiriri FC and Iwokrama FC. A break in the action is planned for August 26 to 31 due to a proposed visit by a Bartica team to Lethem.
In the action to date; July 24 St Ignatius needled Tabatinga 1-0 with Ken Grant (70) scoring the winner. July 26 Gladiators beat Kumu Terminators 2-1 with Nyron Alcides (9, 32) netting a brace, while Lennox Ignacio (25) replied for the losers.
July 31 Tabatinga and Gladiators played out a 1-1 stalemate; Elton Phillips (18) for Tabatinga and Otis George (76) for Gladiators were the scorers.
August 2 Kumu Terminators steamrolled St Ignatius 4-0 thanks to double strikes from B. Xavier (48, 65) and K. Grant (60, 69) despite losing Dermon Ignacio, who was red carded in the 45th minute.
The action was due to continue yesterday with Moco-Moco battling Snatchers. Meanwhile, RFA Secretary Theodore Farias, has come is for much praise on the work being done for the sport in the Rupununi area. The association has also been able to attract assistance from an overseas donor, who has presented over $1M in equipment which will be distributed to teams in the North, Central and South Central Rupununi communities.
The Salt Sleep Football Club of Canada through James and Lana Lowe recently presented the equipment which included footballs, jerseys, hoses and other gear.
