Quick reaction by ranks of the Guyana Fire Service last evening averted what might have turned into an ugly fire at lot 21 Bel Air Avenue, Lamaha Gardens.
Sattie Persaud was one of a family of six at home when the family heard a cracking sound. “We were watching Capitol News and after we hear the sound we get up and check and we see smoke.”
She said that the smoke was coming from her bedroom at the back of the house. “We tried to out it but we couldn’t because it had caught on to the wardrobe door which is made of plyboards so we run out of the house,” she said.
Among those who ran out of the building were Sattie’s husband, Carl Persaud, 55 who had tried to extinguish the flames.
He sustained burns and had to be rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after minor burns to his left hand.
Up to press time the man was still being treated in the trauma room of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
At the home the family members —- Trina, Andrew, Roy, Sattie and four-year-old Chad—- were gathered together a doors down the street. They could not say what the damage was.
However one Family friend said that most of the damage was contained in the back bedroom of the five-bedroom house.
Neighbours were in high praise of the fire service for deploying three fire tenders to the location in a timely manner.
