MCY&S, MOH & GCF to host ‘The Big Ride’
By Franklin Wilson
The biggest ever fun cycling event to ever hit the shores of Guyana will come off on Sunday August 23.
This announcement was made by the Honorable Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony at a press conference hosted in the Board Room of his Ministry, yesterday morning.
Dr. Anthony said the event, which is open to all and sundry will start at the University of Guyana Public Road at 17:00hrs on Sunday August 23 and conclude at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue.
He also disclosed that the event which is expected to attract thousands of riders and traditional cyclists is being done in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Guyana Cycling Federation under the theme, ‘Ride On, Live Long’.
It was emphasized that the event is open to all and not limited to anyone, as long as you have a bicycle you can take part.
The Ministry of Sports has been supporting the development of cycling by sponsoring a number of events which include the annual three-stage, Teach Them Young and the now resuscitated five-stage classic which is set for November 5 – 8, 2009.
The ‘Big Ride’ Minister Anthony stated, will be used as a build up to the November event. “Instead of waiting until that major event I felt we can do some build up activities and one of these activities is the ‘Big Ride’. This activity is intended for anyone who has a bicycle, all you have to do is to have a bicycle and come out and ride with us.”
“If this one is successful, our intention is to have it in other regions as well. We are very confident by the response we have had so far that this event is going to be quite successful.’
Individual prizes will not be given out, rather, trophies will be awarded to groups who participate. These are the Village with the most riders; organization with the most riders; best uniformed group; largest youth group and the Ministry with the most riders.
Registration for the group prizes closes on August 20, and forms can be uplifted from the Sports and Health Ministry or the Cycling Federation. There is no cut off time for individuals riding.
The entire activity the Minister noted is in keeping with their ‘Fit for Life’ thrust that they have embarked on a few years ago. “We feel if we start instilling in organisations the values of fitness – getting them to ride, creating occasions for people to come out and ride with us – then we’ll be achieving our whole goal of getting a more fit and active population.”
It was reported that to date about 300 persons from a number of organisations have already registered.
Sharing yesterday’s press conference were Nazim Hussain – Community Mobalisation Coordinator of the National Aids Programme Secretariat an arm of the Ministry of Health. Hussain said they were happy for the opportunity to be a part of the event and will as usual – referring to their partnership with the five-stage cycle race – take the opportunity to distribute educational information and materials on HIV / AIDS to all the participants.
Director of Youth within the Sports Ministry Carl Brandon and National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed M.S were also present.
The tagline for the activity, ‘Ride On, Live Long’ was crafted by work study students who are attached to the National Aids Programme Secretariat.
Dr. Anthony in disclosing this information noted that all participants will receive a wrist band with the inscription, ‘Ride On, Live Long’.
“What it is trying to portray is that if you participate in active living, by having a healthy lifestyle you‘ll be able to live longer, and I think it’s very useful that our young people who are on work study can come up with such a profound statement. We are very grateful to them for this theme and we are using it as our tagline.”
