– wins competition on eve of her birthday
Excitement, drama and good Caribbean vibes rocked the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground over the weekend when the final show of the GT&T Cellink Jingle and Song Competition was successfully staged.
A 32-year-old butcher, Malika Boyd, walked away with the title and bragging rights to be called this year’s
GT&T Cellink Jingle and Song Competition winner.
In the midst of all of tension, Boyd after being declared the winner collapsed on the stage, shocked.
After a few seconds, Boyd was back on her feet jumping and smiling, sharing in the experience with a well packed audience awaiting her first official performance as the winner this year.
In an interview, Boyd told this newspaper that she is ‘ecstatic and thrilled’. She noted that from day one all she wanted to do was to drive off with the car but realised in the end that the competition had much more to offer her.
Boyd was a crowd favourite from the beginning of the quarterfinal round of the Jingle and Song Competition. The Lindener said that finally her dreams of using her God- given talent are bearing fruit.
Crowd favourite and star performer, Calvin Burnett placed second. The crowd as expected was not pleased with this decision. Michael Thompson, another crowd favourite, had to settle for third position sealing off the top three performers.
Both Burnett and Thompson thanked all of their fans and supporters for ensuring that they have a lifetime of experiences.
The journey now begins for these three performers, having proven that they are better than the more than 300 potential artistes who auditioned.
Guyanese were treated to several teasers and upbeat songs by local artistes such as Ian Corbin known as ‘Fojo’, the sexy and succulent reigning soca Monarch Shelly G and who could ever forget Tamika Marshall, a former winner of the Jingle Competition herself.
Last year’s Winner, Cleon Codogan, performed his ‘Destiny Speaks’ the winning song last year.
Throughout the night, tribute and homage was paid to local artistes who made several attempts to developing the music industry here. Tributes were also paid to Guyanese icons such as Eddy Grant.
The theme for this year’s Jingle Competition was ‘Caribbean Rhythm, Guyanese Vibes’.
