After being stabbed multiple times by her estranged husband, 39-year-old Sumintra Rampersaud still remains in a critical condition in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Yesterday, hospital officials said that she was lapsing in and out of consciousness. Hospital officials yesterday told this newspaper that Rampersaud has began to bleed internally which has caused doctors to worry.
A relative who was at the hospital yesterday afternoon said that the woman is also a diabetic which is another cause for concern.
The woman was stabbed by her estranged husband last week with a sharpened piece of wood. She received gaping wounds to her neck and other parts of her body.
Kaieteur News was told that after the woman separated from her husband she started an affair, and this infuriated her husband who was desperate to get her back.
According to reports, Rampersaud’s husband, knowing that his wife would visit her lover frequently at a specific time, hid and waited for her.
Rampersaud eventually turned up and her husband attacked her. He fled after she collapsed.
Rampersaud was rescued by public-spirited persons who heard her screams and summoned a taxi to rush her to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. She was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital because of the severity of her injuries.
The woman’s youngest daughter who was at the hospital, recalled that her mother had told them that she was going to the shop.
The child said that after some time had elapsed, they became worried and called an aunt. Relatives only became aware of Rampersaud’s plight a day after, when the hospital contacted them.
Rampersaud’s husband has been remanded to prison on the charge of attempting to commit murder.
