Dear Editor,
At last, all of the things that we in the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) and others in the society had talked and written about and the suspicions we harboured about high officials in the Guyana government being involved in the identification and execution of Guyanese citizens have now, very dramatically, burst into the open in a court in Brooklyn, New York.
On July 28, 2009, Selwyn Vaughn, a former member of the notorious Roger Khan phantom squad and now informant for the US government, testifying under oath in the trial for witness tampering of former Roger Khan lawyer Robert Simels, has testified about the involvement of Roger Khan and a high official in the Guyana Government, Minister Leslie Ramsammy, in the execution of PNCR member and political commentator Ronald Waddell and Agricola youth organiser Donald Allison.
As the country waits with bated breath for more revelations in this macabre tale, one cannot escape the conclusion that high government officials here are eager to place great reliance on information wrung out of tortured Guyanese and are very dismissive of testimony given under oath in a court of law albeit located outside of Guyana.
More and more as Guyanese ponder on these latest developments they are saying that those who have collaborated in the identification and execution of Guyanese citizens will have no qualms in burning down a ministry, or two or even three.
The WPA believes that the challenge before the political opposition and civil society is for us to decide how to rid this country of this criminal cabal which is in charge of the state and the security forces. Time is not on our side.
We owe it to our citizens to discipline the divisions that keep us apart and to begin to pool our resources as a matter of urgency if this process is to begin and to succeed.
The alternative is to condemn them to a life of greater misery, hopelessness and lawlessness.
The WPA cautions that the PPP/C are the only beneficiaries of the on going squabbling between the political opposition.
They would like the status quo to remain unchanged that is why they continue to play one against the other.
Let us not fall prey to their whims and designs.
It is a patriotic duty to combine our energies and rid ourselves of the common oppressor.
