Man who killed lover’s mom charged
Hamraj Rambachan, the Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara man who stabbed his girlfriend’s mother to death, was yesterday formally charged with murder and remanded to prison.
Rambachan, 23, was not required to plead to the indictable charge when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Vreed-en-hoop Magistrate’s Court on Friday. He appeared calm throughout his one-hour wait in court before Magistrate Latchman read the charge to him.
His attorney begged the court for Rambachan to be seen by doctors as she claimed he had suffered some injuries, and this petition was granted. The case was adjourned to September 11, 2009.
Rambachan was charged with murdering 49-year-old widow, Rajpattie Jagroop, called “Beti” of 103 Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara. He told detectives on Wednesday that he was in love with Jagroop’s 19-year-old daughter, Parbattie Ramlahkan. However, the young lady said she had told him she no longer wanted a relationship with him and in fact “had another boy.”
Rambachan had persisted, and had offered Jagroop a proposal to marry her daughter, but the woman refused.
On Tuesday evening, while Jagroop and another daughter slept, Rambachan reportedly entered the house through a kitchen window and stabbed her to death after she refused to tell him where Parbattie was.
He also injured Jagroop’s other daughter, Basmattie Ramlahkan.
