Work on $5M tennis facility to restart after rainy season

This is the current state of the Non Pareil Tennis Courts where re-surfacing work is expected after the rainy weather ends.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar speaking with the media yesterday at the National Sports Commission Head Office disclosed that the long-delayed work to complete the tennis facility at the Non Pariel Hardcourts will recommence as soon as the weather improves.
The Director told reporters that acting on the advice of Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn and Engineer within the Ministry, Walter Willis, work to re-surface the facility and improve infrastructure came to a halt due to the rainy weather, but was expected to restart shortly.
According to Kumar, the cost of the project is around $5 million, adding that it will be professionally done with input being had from the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association member, Maxie Fox. The Director had earlier stated that due to the shortage of asphalt, work at the facility had to be rescheduled.
“We received the warrant from the Ministry of Finance and we’ve sent the monies directly to the Ministry of Works,” Kumar disclosed.
The Director was responding to queries made by this newspaper pertaining to the cost of projects undertaken by the Ministry including the Olympic-size Swimming Pool, which has raised questions about the accuracy of figures disclosed to the media.
Meanwhile, the Director reporting on the current state of affairs with regards to the Inter-Guianas Games said that Chess had been added to the list of activities that will now be played between the three countries even though it will not add to the points standings. “The other two countries Suriname and French Guiana have accepted a request by us to see Chess played during the Games, but due to protocol it will not add to the points tally,” Kumar said. The Games is set for mid-October in Suriname.
