The Ear, Nose and Throat Department of the Georgetown Public Hospital Paediatric Unit was on Thursday endowed with an audiology booth, which according to Head of the Department, Dr. Ruth Quaicoe, will greatly improve the service offered to the public as it relates to hearing impairment.
According to Dr. Quaicoe, the equipment is one that would serve to better discern an individual’s hearing ability, thus advancing the department’s ability to prescribe the most suitable intervention.
She said that as the central point for audiology service in Guyana, most persons are referred to the public hospital to seek the more expanded services offered there, which will now be boosted with the timely donation. The equipment, she said, will be ably operated by technicians within the department who have been adequately trained in this regard.
The endowment came with the compliments of an overseas group that has been engaged in a medical mission here in Guyana for the past two weeks. The group, which includes paediatric doctors, Claudette Heyliger-Thomas and Joan Liverpool and eight supporting members, has been offering medical services to the areas of Parika and Fort Wellington since their arrival here.
And as part of its wrapping up segment, Dr. Heyliger-Thomas said that the group was tasked with handing over the audiology booth which was donated by Dr. Howard Lampe.
Speaking of the auspicious career of Dr. Lampe who was born in the United States but migrated to the United Kingdom, Dr Heyliger-Thomas outlined the donor doctor’s, professional path as she noted his generosity to offer such an important piece of equipment to the hospital.
According to Dr. Heyliger-Thomas, Dr. Lampe has also donated another audiology booth which will be sent to Fort Wellington to be integrated as part of a mobile unit there to assist patients who have difficulty getting to the central point of audiology service at the Georgetown Hospital.
The audiology equipment was shipped to Guyana free of cost by the Guyana Christian Family of Ontario, Canada.
