Adine Hinzten, 24, of 89 Wismar, Linden, and Leon Adelph, 21, of 24 ‘C’ Old Road East Coast Demerara, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, jointly charged with simple larceny.
It was alleged that the two defendants between July 5 and July 6, at New Road Enaku Back-dam, broke and entered the sleeping quarters of Leyland Bobb, and stole a quantity of articles valuing $408,000. They both pleaded not guilty.
Hinzten was represented by attorney-at-law Basil Williams, while Adelph was unrepresented.
According to the lawyer, Hinzten, who is a father of one, has an unblemished record, and he is extremely surprised that there is a “house” in the back dam.
Williams further told the court that the offence is an eminently bailable and thus bail should be granted in a reasonable sum.
Police Prosecutor Munilall Seetaram did not oppose bail for Hinzten, but objected to bail for Adelph.
According to the prosecutor, Adelph was previously charged with similar offences. Seetaram said that the same defendant was also charged under the alias of “Seon King” and there is the likelihood that he would not return to court if bail is granted.
The prosecution further stated that the same defendant is presently on a bond to keep the peace for a year.
Hinzten was granted $100,000 bail while Adelph was denied bail.
Both defendants are expected to make another court appearance on August 5. The matter has been transferred to Bartica Magistrates Court.
