Brian Benjamin, 48, of Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara, was yesterday remanded to prison until he repays a $35,000 debt.
Benjamin, who had appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates Court is charged with robbery under arms.
It was alleged that Benjamin, on June 24, while armed with a knife, robbed Michelle Gravesande of a pair of gold ear-rings worth $35,000. He pleaded not guilty. He is being represented by Attorney at law, Mohamed Zafar. The lawyer asked the court for bail in a reasonable sum. He said that Benjamin had a previous matter in court, but that was four years ago.
Police Prosecutor Munilall Seetaram said that bail should be refused, because the defendant was charged only three months ago.
The lawyer interjected and told the court that his client has offered to repay Gravesande.
Bail was denied and the accused is expected to make another court appearance today, when Benjamin is scheduled to repay Gravesande.
