Crippled accident victim case…
A 16-year old, unlicensed driver who struck down a 47-year old woman, leaving her crippled for life, was remanded to prison when he appeared before a city magistrate last week.
The young man from Alexander Village was initially charged with dangerous driving and despite arguments by his attorney, the magistrate agreed with the prosecution to deny him his pre-trial liberty.
According to the prosecution, on Sunday, June 21, the teenager drove a car belonging to his uncle in a dangerous manner, causing it to come into contact with Lilowtie Persaud in front of her Fourth Street, Alexander Village home.
The woman has been hospitalised since and doctors had indicated that she will never walk again.
However, counsel for the 16-year old told the court that the woman is of unsound mind and would normally walk the street in an uncaring manner.
However, this was hotly disputed by the injured woman’s family who insisted that the woman was struck down while standing on the road parapet.
Meanwhile, the teen’s uncle was earlier granted bail in the sum of $60,000 for permitting an unlicenced driver to drive his vehicle.
