Former Guyana Defence Force and National volleyball player, Leon Gilkes in a telephone conversation with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, revealed that the game in Region One is developing at a fast rate and he envisages that come next year, representative teams from that community could provide a stiff challenge for those in more traditional areas.
According to Gilkes, who has been instrumental in igniting interest in the sport among the Amerindian villages, the game is very popular among the residents, especially in Mabaruma, where efforts are currently being made to introduce the game into the school system.
“Presently we have two female clubs that are very active right now and moves are being made at this moment to form clubs at the Under-13, 15 and 17 levels,” Gilkes disclosed.
He added that a few tournaments had been organised lately with the last one staged in commemoration of Independence Day, where both male and female categories were contested.
He opined that the turnout was a sure testimony to the rise in the level of interest in the sport within the communities.
The former national player now coach, disclosed that a tournament is being planned for Amerindian Heritage Month and the aim is to provide players with more opportunities to play, while at the same time attempting to popularise the game by the provision of bigger incentives.
The Guyana Volleyball Federation through its President, Lenox Shuffler has in the past demonstrated support for the community and donated three balls, which were used during the Independence tournament.
