– Greene, Fortune misfire
Kelvin Johnson stormed to an emphatic win in the 10,000m Saturday night at the Trinidad and Tobago National Senior Championships in a time that would have made the standard of qualification for the cancelled Caribbean Games.
Johnson ran 32:42.00 to beat Trinidad and Tobago’s Trevor Roland (33:20) and Clarence Serias (33:55) at the marquee competition at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Athletes had to run below 33 minutes to qualify for the Games.
Johnson won Guyana’s only gold medal at the event after Dennis Horatio brought fourth in the Steeple Chase and sprinters, Rawle Greene and Alisha Fortune misfired in the 100m sprint events also on Saturday night.
Details of the races are unclear but sources told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that Greene did not compete in the Men’s International 100m race, but rather opted to run in the 100m ‘B’ race for sprinters with lower times over the distance.
The source said that Greene failed to medal in the final of that race, while Fortune did not get past the first round in her event. Trinidad’s Olympic 100m silver medallist, Richard Thompson won the International 100m race.
