Three held, weapon found after Sophia robbery
Police have detained three men who are believed to be part of a gang that has been terrorising residents of South Sophia and surrounding areas, following an armed robbery on Wednesday night.
The arrests resulted from the prompt response of ranks of a police mobile patrol who were in the Sophia area around the same time the robbery was taking place.
Their action led to the recovery of a 9mm Taurus pistol and a cellular phone which was claimed by one of the victims of the robbery as his.
According to a statement from Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, about 21:30 hours on Wednesday the three bandits who were armed with the gun, a cutlass and an ice pick, pounced on a minibus, robbing the conductor and a passenger in the process.
The police said that the minibus was proceeding along the roadway at ‘B’ Field, Sophia, when it stopped to put off another passenger.
The three bandits came up and held the victims at gunpoint before ordering them to lie on the ground.
The men then took away two cell phones and a total of $8,300 from the two victims and escaped.
Minutes later, members of a mobile police patrol that was in ‘E’ Field, Sophia, saw the three men and challenged them. As the ranks approached they observed one of them throwing an object into a nearby clump of bushes.
They were arrested and a subsequent search of the bushes led to the recovery of the unlicensed 9mm Taurus pistol. The men were also identified as the perpetrators of another robbery in May in which a woman was robbed.
The men were identified as Mark Davis of North Ruimveldt, Marlon Bourne of Sophia and Anthony gill of Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
They will be placed on an identification parade to determine if they were involved in any other robberies.
