Lindany Phillips, 23, the Guyana Defence Force rank who stabbed her boyfriend, Carl Ally, last week, was yesterday jailed for two years after she pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful wounding. Phillips was accused of stabbing Ally on June 2, at Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara.
Yesterday before the sentence was handed down by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates Court; Phillips proceeded to tell the magistrate that she was sorry for causing Ally and his family all the pain they have suffered.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith, told the court that on the day in question the defendant was visiting the virtual complainant at his Meadow Bank home.
The prosecutor explained that the two had a misunderstanding over a cell phone call and as a result the defendant became annoyed and stabbed Ally once to the chest. The matter was later reported and the defendant was arrested. The prosecutor said that Ally spent one week in the hospital.
Phillips had earlier told the court that her actions were not intentional, that she was only acting in self-defence.
She also claimed that she was the victim of constant abuse by the virtual complainant. She was subsequently sentenced to two years imprisonment by the magistrate.
Family members, who were present at the court, were very emotional with one saying “Lindnay was so young and had her whole life ahead and that she should have been given another chance”.
