– nabbed on public road with booty
The quantity of items of clothing, utensils, suitcases and electronic items that a West Berbice man had in his possession alongside the roadway at 02:30 hours on June 8 last, caused a passing police officer to become suspicious.
”Somebody moving out at 2:30 am?” he said.
It didn’t seem normal and so the policeman who was on his way to other business, contacted the nearest police station and asked the officers there to check it out.
The officers at the Fort Wellington Police Station complied and so ended a West Berbice burglary and larceny spree by 30-year-old Rawle Doris, of Lovely Lass Village, West Coast Berbice.
All the items that he had in his possession were stolen from four homes less than three hours earlier.
The larcenies and burglaries were committed on homes at Lovely Lass Village where he lived and Onverwagt and Number 28, the next two neighbouring villages.
He had executed his crimes in an immaculate manner.
None of the victims knew of their losses until they awakened the next day.
Doris however fell short at the critical end of his operations: getting the stolen booty home.
All of the items stolen from the homes were recovered intact. In the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court yesterday Doris, threw in the towel without a fight.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of simple larceny and two charges of burglary.
Another burglary charge, in which he was alleged to have stolen household equipment valued at $200,000 in December last, was dropped after the virtual complainant, who also recovered all the stolen items, declined to give evidence against him.
Before sentencing, a contrite Doris told the Court that he was “not himself” when he committed the acts.
He said he was under a “spell of obeah” when he entered the homes between midnight and 02:00 hours.
He got a total of seven years in jail.
Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop who imposed the sentences however ordered that they run concurrently.
Doris apologized to the victims before being led away.
