Two persons are currently being treated at the Suddie Hospital, after being involved in a speed boat collision, in the vicinity of Troolie Island in the Essequibo River.
This newspaper was told that the incident occurred some time around 19:00 hours on Sunday. The two boats were heading in the opposite direction.
The police stated that the collision occurred as the two boats were negotiating a bend in the river.
All twelve passengers who were onboard the two boats have been accounted for.
Reports are that the captain of one of the boats involved, who has only been identified as ‘Levi’, is yet to report to the police.
Sources say that the boat which was captained by ‘Levi’ had left Buck Hall with two passengers heading to Parika.
The other boat driven by Compton Wallace, had left Parika and was heading to Buck Hall.
While the boats were negotiating a turn at Troolie Island, they collided, sending all the passengers overboard. They were however rescued by a boat from Troolie Island and taken to Buckhall.
The two injured persons, Devon Hinds of Linden, and Rickford Wallace, were subsequently taken to the Suddie Hospital for treatment.
This newspaper was told that as a result of the extent of damage to ‘Levi’s’ boat, it sank.
Up to press time yesterday it had not been recovered, nor had the captain made himself available to the police.
In the meantime, sources close to the investigation told this newspaper that statements are being taken from the passengers in order for a thorough investigation to be carried out.
Charges are likely since there is a cut off time for boats to be traveling in the river.
