Scores of passengers are currently fuming at the inefficient service meted out to them whilst traveling with LIAT Airlines, starting Sunday. The troubles started when the LIAT, 772 was supposed to depart Piarco International Airport, Trinidad, at 14:30hrs on Sunday, but left shortly before 17:00 hrs.
When the passengers arrived in Barbados, they had to wait sometime before being allowed to board flight 512, destined for Antigua, with an onward connection to St. Kitts.
This happened after 20:00hrs when it should have been boarded at 17:05hrs.
After waiting for about 20 minutes onboard, the passengers were again greeted with bad news in that there was an announcement on the PA system that a security device on the plane went missing, and further, the flight crew which came from Georgetown was past their flying time (hours of work) and had to be changed.
Hoping that the worst had passed, passengers were then told that they would have to overnight in Barbados and leave at 08:00hrs yesterday morning.
The passengers had to comply given that they had no choice, but things were no different yesterday morning as the flight was again delayed. This time, an announcement was made at about 10 minutes past the scheduled departure time, that the flight was delayed due to maintenance and another announcement would be made at 09:00hrs.
Prior to the announcement being made, some passengers inquired as to what was really transpiring and were told that the Pilot was in the plane and whenever he was ready, that would be the time of departure. Incidentally, the same excuse of maintenance was given to passengers the night before (Sunday) whilst waiting. When finally the passengers were allowed to check in yesterday, the line was very long and there was confusion, since there were some passengers in Barbados, for in some cases, two days delayed.
The flight was subsequently rescheduled to depart some time after noon yesterday, but the passengers were eventually told that there is some sort of industrial action on by the pilots who are demanding more pay. It is unclear if the flight ever made it off the ground yesterday.
