Yet another pensioner is expressing frustration meted out to him by staff at the National Insurance Scheme.
T. Perisami of Nandy Park is of the view that the staff at the NIS, believe that they are doing persons a favour whenever a request for benefits is made.
The pensioner told this newspaper that on countless occasions, calls to the NIS are never returned and visits to the various offices are fruitless, since the relevant officials are never available to address issues of grave concern.
A number of pensioners and benefit claimants have expressed similar sentiments about the services officered by the NIS.
Perisami told Kaieteur News that for the past two years, he has been contacting the NIS with regards to his benefits, and despite appointments, he has never had a hearing.
The delay in receiving his benefits has to do with queries regarding his NIS contributions over a 30-year period.
According to documents in the possession of the pensioner, there are several gaps in his NIS contributions over the period 1969 to 2001.
It was revealed that no NIS contributions were recorded for the years 1976 and 1978 and none for the period 1980-1987, although the pensioner was working and his pay slips recorded NIS deductions.
Perisami told Kaieteur News that following investigations by the NIS, it was found that his former employer had not made the NIS payments.
Additionally, it was found that the payments that were made, were done on a lower bracket to the pensioner’s salary at the time when it should have been the other way around.
Perisami said that the NIS investigators are aware of these discrepancies and have done nothing to rectify the situation so that he can benefit from his years of employment and paying his fair share into the NIS.
“I spoke to the Manager at the Head Office, and (name given) never returned my calls. I went to see another manager on several occasions and never got to see her. It’s like if these people are doing you a favour,” the frustrated pensioner told this newspaper.
Kaieteur News has repeatedly tried to contact NIS officials about similar complaints, but received no response from the officials.
