As part of its efforts to assist the less fortunate in Guyana, the Women’s Club of the Indian Cultural Centre yesterday donated $280,000 worth in items to the Guyana Relief Council (GRC), the Dharm Shala, the Palms and the Kamal House for the homeless in Berbice.
The items included a number of cooking utensils, radios and wheelchairs among others.
Representatives from the various organizations expressed their appreciation to the Club, as they pointed out that the items will be put to good use.
The women’s club of the Indian Cultural Centre, came about when some diplomats of the Indian High Commission saw the need for women who were Indian nationals and Guyanese women of Indian origin, to integrate socially and culturally.
The club raised the money for the donation through a lunch hosted in May, which was well supported by the public.
Vice President of the club, Chandra Harricharan, said that the club has far exceeded the expectations of those involved, as there are many organizations that benefit from its fund raising efforts.
In November, the club will be celebrating its 30th anniversary and over the years, apart from social and charitable work, the club has launched its first and second edition of their cookery book called ‘Culinary Delights.’
