Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty used her discretion and granted bail to a Headmaster from Karawab, Lower Pomeroon, on a charge of carnally knowing a girl, between the age of fifteen and 16. The accused, Ralph Hendricks, is being represented by Alfred Bacchus.
Hendricks was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
According to a police report, on Thursday May 28, at Karawab, Hendricks being the Headmaster of the Ulene Primary School, allegedly had sex with one of his 15-year-old students at his quarters, which is situated in the school’s compound.
The report further revealed that the headmaster allegedly sent the student to his apartment, and then followed.
It is also alleged that having committed the act, he gave the girl $2000, a sum that caused her to be dissatisfied and led to her reporting the incident to her friends.
The village captain learnt of the incident and launched an investigation into the matter.
Hendricks was later arrested and escorted to the Anna Regina police station, where he was incarcerated.
In making his application for bail, defence counsel Bacchus first noted that his client is not a flight risk.
Mr. Bacchus also stated that Hendricks is a father of four and that he was appointed to the position of headmaster five years ago. But police inspector Oswald Pitt, sought a longer period of detention to be properly familiarised with the matter, and objected to bail.
He told the court that the offence was serious and prevalent.
Hendricks was placed on $200,000 bail.
