The Medicine Chest–sponsored Malteenoes Table Tennis Open Championships begin today at 9:30am at the Malteenoes Sports Club, where the crème de le crème in the sport in Guyana are expected to vie for some 13 titles.
The tournament will feature games in the girls’ Under-15 and Open categories and in the boys’ Under-13, Under-15, Under-21, Open male and Masters groups. The competition is expected to continue tomorrow at the same time.
Vice-President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association and Malteenoes member, Arron Fraser, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the programme is part of the resuscitation of the sport at the facility that once hosted table tennis. “It is part of the resuscitation, revitalisation and rehabilitation of table tennis at the Malteenoes,” Fraser said, adding that most of the big names in the sport are expected to play in the event that will become annual. Guyana’s overseas-based national players, Idi Lewis and Paul David are to feature along with locals Christopher Franklin, Nigel Bryan, Joel Alleyne among others in the various male competitions.
Trenace Lowe and Jody Ann-Blake headline the women’s playoff. According to Fraser, current national men’s champion, Godfrey Munroe and Mathew Khan are the only two ‘big names’ that will not feature.
