Some two dozen ranks from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) underwent intense training in effectively dealing with a mass casualty scenario. The training session was done at the Ogle airport by airmen from the United States Air Force Southern Command.
The knowledge of the ranks was put to the test, when they were involved in a sensitization programme, that saw them applying their skills in a make believe casualty case, in which a number of persons were injured in a two-vehicle accident.
Captain Adam Halls, ER Physician in Texas, and from the United States Air Force, said that the organisation wants to be able to train both civilians and defenses to properly respond to disaster incidents where there are multiple persons injured.
He added that they must be able to sort through the most seriously injured patients and take care of them according to their limited resources in a first responder scenario, where there has been a multi vehicle accident.
“I think that the ranks are responding very well. We taught them a lot and we want to test their ability to apply that knowledge in an actual scenario. They are doing very well.”
Defence Force Medical Officer, Major Frederick Deen, said that the ranks have been challenged, but this is nothing new to them, as it has been done before by the GDF.
He however pointed out that this exercise was more intense and they are now better trained to deal with a disaster if it is to occur.
The airmen from the United States Air Force Southern Command, arrived in Guyana last Sunday, aboard a United States (US) Air Force C-130 J Hercules plane, with the aim of exchanging information and ideas with those within the local Air Corps.
The arrival of the Air Force team here, represents the second iteration of the US Air Force Programme “Operation Southern Partner” which has been introduced in seven Caribbean and Latin American nations.
A total of about 60 airmen have been dispatched to Guyana, Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Belize as part of the exchange effort.
