The blood collection effort seems to be improving in the country as at the end of May, a total of 3,286 units were taken in. Of that number, the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) collected 2,549.
In this regard, Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said that the ministry is on track to accumulate a total of 8,000 units by the end of 2009, while they are also on target for 10,000 units by 2010.
The Berbice Regional Health Authority collected 244 units, while the Red Cross in Georgetown collected 178 units.
Minister Ramsammy noted that Suddie has made a remarkable improvement as 118 units were collected at the end of May, while the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital collected 41 units and Woodlands Hospital, 107 units. He explained that of the 3,286 units, 66% has been through voluntary donation, while 34% was via family replacement.
The NBTS, he said, has the most successful voluntary donation program, as out of the 2,549 units of blood collected, 72.4% is from volunteers.
Meanwhile, the Society for Empowerment and Holistic Advancement held a blood drive last month, where a total of 214 units were collected.
According to Minister Ramsammy, this is not only the largest single blood drive collection in Guyana’s history but it is the largest single collection in the history of the Caribbean.
“So within the English-speaking Caribbean this is the first time that in a single day, we have been able to collect more than 200 units of blood at a single site.”
Last year, the same group conducted a blood drive where they established a record of 106 units.
“That’s the kind of enthusiasm we need. Other organizations have that same desire and I know Cacique tried to break the record this year, and I pay tribute to them. So it doesn’t have to be that you break that record to be acknowledged. The fact is that they made a very good effort and in a one-day drive, collected 100 units of blood,” the Health Minister noted.
